Title: Steering Damper Saga
Post by: inkaporka on October 14, 2013, 03:46:56 PM
G'day all

Just been around and around trying to find a steering damper - the original one is rooted and no-one wants to rebuild it, have tried a few US Ducati specialists for an Ohlins and no luck, in fact I have been told that the SD156 has been discontinued, not the news I was hoping to hear!
Anyway, I thought that maybe one of you gurus out there would know of a possible compatible fit, I would prefer Ohlins but well, it seems beggars can't be choosers in this case. I guess as long as the mount fits and the stroke is the same, another damper should work. Oh incidentally I sent Ducati Saarland (as they seem to have quite a few bits on ther website for MH900e's) an email but not speaking German put me at a distinct disadvantage...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I am sure I am not the only owner to face this issue.

Cheers

I would try this one.
But I'm not able to check the diameter of the steering dumper from paul smart.
The use of the dumper from the 998 thould be possible but it is a little shoter and there is no possibility for adjustig.
The upper fork crown from MHe and PS is the same i think... or not? check it out.

Hey Inkaporka, send your old damper to Richard at Maxton Engineering in the uk and he'll make you a damper with the same stroke and everything else, maybe better! Have a look and contact him through the maxton website....their suspension is as good as any of the leading race suspension houses and they custom make anything you need unlike ohlins etc...

I've found on google that some one in this site is organising a group by of the Ohlins steering dampener as Ohlins want a minimum order of 25 to put the dampener back into production.
I can not find the post within this site.
It was posted on the 8th of November this year.
Does anyone have any idea who this is???
I am very interested in helping out and getting Ohlins to put the dampener back into production.

You might want to post something on Ducati.ms if you havent already as this site doesnt get much traffic. All MH questions should be posted under the "Sport Classic" forum. Good luck.

That was me.  I had no luck getting interested parties so I gave up.  Finding enough people to actually commit is impossible.  I gave up for now. If I knew I could unload all 25 and not lose a dime...  I'd make the investment.  This would be high-risk with no real yield for me.

My OP on Ducati.ms was under matt376

We did a number of group buys of items on the old MH900e site.  I'll commit to an Ohlins steering damper if there is a group buy.

Well...  4 is progress.  Perhaps another few years and we will have 25!!  It only took 6 months to get you 4.   ;) ;) ;) ;)  I'll keep checking back

It would be interesting to know how many of the original 2000 bikes are still on the road or at least serviceable, and out of that number how many have already been fitted with aftermarket steering dampers, and how many are suffering with original units that are shagged.

One would think that it should not be so hard to get a paltry 1.25% of owners, i.e. 25 interested in this group buy - perhaps a letter to the Ohlins factory requesting they drop the minimum to 10 may work? Anything is worth a try - either that once we get 13 definite buyers, they buy 2 each and put one aside for when those who are hanging back really need one, and have to buy at a premium...

I am a definite starter, lets put some energy into this and make it happen one way or another!

Awesome Gnasher, we are now 33% of the way there! I note that the topic has been read 3887 or so times, so you would think out of that number of views a measly 25 units would be possible - mind you half of those views are probably mine, haha!

Lets keep it going and make it happen, be good to see 0980 whole again!

Id be in 100%, but l bought one from the states that was for sale on ebay towards the end of last year.

Can we do the same thing for the aluminium belt covers they are impossible to find !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey DD, I'm working in the belt covers, the engineering shop has them to figure out and will let me know what is possible. Once they have done one set they will be easily able to do more, problem is they are a great shop so are inundated with work. They are also doing me new fork tops....watch this space, no minimum order so there'll be no long wait time to find 24 other people!  8)

Hi lordmoonpie,

I am in 100% when once you know if and when they can do them.

Title: Potential Solution
Post by: DucatMH on February 22, 2017, 08:36:54 PM
Since trying to start a group buy for the SD 156 I was eventually lucky enough to acquire one. Yay me! I know how ridiculous it is to find these guys so I have reached out to a colleague of mine that does a ton of CNC work.  Long story short how many of you would be truly interested in buying a setup that used the same Ohlins damper (would be new) and a custom CNC mount that was of equal or better quality than the original SD156 kit and would include all hardware? I don't know cost yet as I have to get my bracket off my bike and sent to him for him to asses. Once I know more, I'll probably start a new thread with more details.  If it falls short and not worth producing I'll be sure to let you all know. Rather than cluttering up this thread any further, shoot me a pm of you're interested. FWIW we won't need the 25 required by Ohlins.

I'd be in.  Make that 10.
Just bought an '01 MH with 9 miles.
Also, interested in the Staintune cans...got an email from Adam at S/T and said the another gent has expressed interest...so he'll make two sets...headers also, if desire.
.
Back to the steering damper...I'm in.

G'day guys, I haven't checked into the forum for a long while but now that I have, I can't believe people are paying US$1200 for a steering damper, unbelievable! I will get back in touch with the Ohlins dude and see if they can do us a deal for the 10 that I see on this thread, if you are all still interested - no way I am paying $1200. Will get back on as soon as I have some news cheers.

Inkaporka - I no longer need one, I found one through Ohlins head office but unfortunately it's the last kit recorded worldwide so no more available unless you can convince them to manufacture. Having said that I am talking to a dealer who claims to have three kits in stores and is looking for me, in which case I'll offer them up here for you guys. The price is going to be around 600 GBP for the full kit if he can find them to confirm, so something around $800 USD, brand new. I'll update you if I manage to get a response!

Your OEM one Chris? No, not bothered with that, once the Ohlins went on I couldn't ever go back to the OEM one.  ;)
